ontainers for yard waste
  • Any reusable container without a lid (e.g. plastic tubs, old blue boxes, metal or plastic garbage cans). Please do not overfill the containers – keep them light enough so that you can carry them easily to the curb or lane. We will not collect containers heavier than 22 kg (50 lbs).
  • Cardboard boxes. These will be taken away with your yard waste. Please do not put cardboard boxes out in heavy rain - any boxes falling apart will not be collected or cleaned up by collectors.
  • Paper yard waste bags. You can buy them at many stores.
We will not collect yard waste in plastic bags. Plastic bags do not break down and will ruin the finished compost.
Acceptable materials
Inside your container
  • grass clippings, leaves, plants, flowers
  • bush/shrub clippings
  • small tree branches (no more than 10 cm or 4 inches in diameter)
Beside your container
  • tied bundles of branches – no longer than one metre (39 inches) or heavier than 22 kg (50 lbs)
Unacceptable materials
  • logs, stumps
  • rocks, dirt, sod
  • flower pots
  • branches more than one metre long (39 inches)
  • garbage of any kind (including animal waste)
  • painted or treated wood or lumber
Tips
  • Leave at least an arm's length space between your yard waste containers, and your garbage and recycling carts.
  • Mulched leaves will take up less space in your yard waste container. Mulching, shredding leaves with a lawnmower, returns nutrients to your lawn or soil.
To mulch leaves, remove the grass catcher from your lawnmower and mow your lawn when it is covered with dry, dead leaves. Make several passes until the shreds of leaves are dime-sized. Then you can leave the mulch on your lawn, or put it into your garden.
  • You can take all of your leaf and yard waste to the Brady Road Landfill free of charge, as long as it is in reusable containers, paper yard waste bags, or cardboard boxes. You can also bring your yard waste loose, in a covered trailer. If your yard waste is in plastic bags, you must empty the yard waste from the plastic bag, and take the plastic bag home with you. You will not be allowed to leave the plastic bag. This is to prevent plastic from contaminating the Compost Site.
  • Grasscycle — leave grass clippings on the lawn after mowing. Clippings return nutrients to the soil and are part of a healthy lawn care program.
